SCANDALOUS!!!!
2013 is the 100th anniversary of the scandalous premier of ________, a ballet and orchestral concert work with music composed by Igor Stravinsky. When first performed at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on May 29, 1913, the audience was expecting the pleasant sounds of Spring. When the curtain rose and the dancing began, there appeared to be no melody, only a loud, pulsating, dissonant chord with jarring, irregular accents and rhythms, and a primitive, barbaric scenario. It was so avant-garde and unexpected that it provoked a riot DURING the performance: catcalls and whistles from the crowd escalated by shouts and fistfights in the aisles, and police arrived on scene!! Although the work was designed for stage, its music achieved equal if not greater recognition as a concert piece, and is widely considered to be one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century.
